We know all the methods of pulling out a loose tooth; tying a string around the tooth, prying it free with our tongues, or just reaching in and yanking it out, too impatient to wait for the Tooth Fairy! But that you’re a parent yourself, you may find yourself wondering about how loose teeth should really be handled.
Just because a tooth is loose doesn’t mean that the permanent one is growing in yet. Kids are notorious for playing rough, and it’s easy to knock a baby tooth loose accidentally. The biggest concern with this scenario is ensuring there’s no infection in the gum tissue or damage to the adult tooth underneath.
Here at Lockett Orthodontics, we don’t recommend pulling out your child’s loose tooth. Damage can be done to the soft tissues around the tooth, causing bleeding, pain, or an infection. The best method is to let a tooth fall out naturally! It’s normal for kids to fidget with a loose tooth, which is fine. Just don’t let them yank it out!
