Do’s and Don’ts of Orthodontic Wax

A woman smiling with braces

When you first have your orthodontic braces placed, you may experience minor discomfort caused by the new foreign objects in your mouth rubbing against the soft tissues of your tongue, cheeks, and lips. Orthodontic wax can provide almost immediate pain relief!

Orthodontic wax is available in drug stores and inexpensive. It’s designed to cushion rough or sharp edges of your braces that would otherwise be irritating. It is non-toxic, soft, and easy to apply whenever you need it. Wax provides a barrier between the hardware in the mouth and the soft tissues. It is made of carnauba, beeswax, or paraffin and is typically flavorless. If you accidentally swallow wax, rest assured that it’s safe if ingested in small quantities.

Orthodontic Wax Do’s & Don’ts

  • Do replace your wax as needed
  • Don’t reuse old pieces of wax or keep one in place for more than two days
  • Do keep the wax in overnight
  • Don’t be alarmed if you swallow it accidentally while eating or sleeping
  • Do contact Lockett Orthodontics if pain persists
  • Don’t attempt to bend, fix, or repair brackets and wires overnight

At Lockett Orthodontics, it’s important to us that your orthodontic experience is positive and pain-free! Using orthodontic wax can offer immediate relief until your mouth gets used to the new braces.

If you’re experiencing pain or would like to know more about dental wax, please contact Lockett Orthodontics here in Colorado Springs, Colorado!
