Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) is the medical term for a condition that causes the gums, tongue, lips, cheeks, or throat to feel like they’re burning. No cause for this condition has been found and, unfortunately, there is not a way to test for it. BMS presents differently in every case and may flare up unexpectedly. Because it’s so rare and the symptoms vary from person to person, this condition can be difficult to diagnose and treat.

There are a few ways you can prevent BMS or at least lessen the severity of it. We recommend avoiding foods and drinks that contain mint, cinnamon, heavy spices, alcohol, or high levels of acidity. Additionally, it may be a good idea to switch to a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth and to take steps to lessen your anxiety and stress.
