Self Ligating Brackets

Self-ligating braces are made from the same materials as traditional braces; however, self-ligating braces don’t require the use of the elastics that traditional braces depend on. This means fewer appointments and less friction placed on the teeth. Self-ligating braces also have more construction options, such as traditional metal, ceramic or clear brackets, which mean they can provide a more aesthetic appearance.

How Do Self-Ligating Braces Work?

Self-ligating braces use a specialized clip instead of elastics in order to help your arch-wire gently move your teeth into the correct position. This clip helps reduce the amount of pressure being placed on your teeth and decreases the number of adjustments because there are no elastics to replace!

There are two different types of self-ligating brackets:

  • Passive brackets use a smaller arch-wire, which creates less friction and allows teeth to move more freely. Passive brackets are usually used at the beginning of treatment in order to help your teeth start moving into position.
  • Active brackets use a thicker arch-wire, which delivers more pressure to the teeth to more aggressively move them into position. The active brackets also offer more control for strong, consistent results.
