Teeth Cleaning

Brushing With Braces

Although Dr. Lockett does not offer teeth cleaning, it is highly recommended to have a teeth cleaning and exam by your general dentist before orthodontic treatment.

Most cleanings take between 25-30 minutes and are essential to removing plaque and tartar buildup, neither of which can be fully and thoroughly removed without professional assistance. If these damaging substances aren’t removed regularly, they can eventually lead to gum disease and many other tooth problems. It’s recommended that you receive a teeth cleaning every 3 to 6 months. Since orthodontic treatment can last up to 2 years, its great to go in knowing your teeth are healthy and clean.

What To Expect During A Dental Cleaning:

  • Your mouth will be examined for inflamed or bleeding gums, tooth infections, decay, open sores or any other concerns.
  • Scaling and root planing- this is the process of removing plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces with a variety of methods, depending on the amount of plaque and tartar.
  • Once the hygienist is finished with the initial cleaning, your dentist will then evaluate your mouth. This will include a cancer screening and a review of the teeth, gums, and any concerns you may have.
