What To Know About Your Child’s Overbite

An overbite is one of the most common reasons for children to receive braces! This orthodontic issue is when the top teeth overlap the bottom teeth, causing facial or bite problems. Luckily, overbites can be treated easily with braces!

What Causes An Overbite?

Overbites are common and can be caused by a number of things. These include:

  • Differences in the eruption of the adult teeth
  • The development of the jawbone
  • Prolonged thumb-sucking
  • Prolonged use of a pacifier
  • Genetics

No matter the reason for an overbite, braces are a great way to improve your child’s oral health and their confidence in their smile!

Braces For An Overbite

Braces work by fixing to your child’s teeth and then being moved firmly, but slowly into the correct position over time. Our skilled orthodontist, Dr. Rhoda Lockett will tighten the braces until the upper teeth match with the bottom teeth, correcting the overbite.

The American Dental Association has recommended that your child visit the orthodontist for a consultation by the age of seven years old as any bite problems should be evident by this time. The earlier that the orthodontic treatment is performed, the better the results will be!

To schedule an appointment for a consultation, please contact Lockett Orthodontics! Our office is located in sunny Colorado Springs, CO!
