Thanksgiving Facts & Trivia

ortho Colorado Springs

Like many holiday traditions, Thanksgiving has no shortage of interesting trivia and history. It’s the time of year for spending time with family, being thankful for the things we have, and eating our weight in traditional Thanksgiving food!

If you find a lull in the conversation around your table this Thanksgiving, a few of the following facts and trivia can serve as great conversation starters. Your guests may also learn a thing or two about this fun (and delicious!) holiday.

4 Fun Thanksgiving Facts

  • Black Friday & Plumbers – The day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday, is perhaps the biggest shopping day of the whole year! However, it’s also the busiest day of the year for plumbers. Why? Please don’t make us spell that out for you!
  • Benjamin Franklin Loved Turkeys – If it had been up to Benjamin Franklin, the turkey would have been the United State’s national bird instead of the bald eagle. He believed turkeys were more respectable birds than eagles.
  • Thanksgiving Invented TV Dinners – In 1953, a Swanson employee misjudged the number of turkeys the company would sell for Thanksgiving that year. Because of this miscalculation, the company was stuck with over 25 tons of extra frozen turkeys! Swanson decided to slice and repackage the turkey, adding some side dishes to the meal. This was the very first TV dinner!
  • Gobble? – The famous turkey noise is actually only made by male turkeys, known as toms. The female turkeys, known as hens, make a sound more closely resembling a cackling sound.
