Link Between Migraines and Dental Issues

Man with a migraineMigraines can indeed be caused by dental problems, especially when the jaws are not properly aligned. Many migraine sufferers have found that orthodontic treatment or other dental work can help to reduce or even eliminate their headaches. Here at Lockett Orthodontics, we can help you discover if dental work or orthodontic treatment can give you relief from headaches and migraines.

Is Dental or Orthodontic Treatment Right for Your Migraines?

When trying to determine if dental treatment is the right way to help you deal with headaches and migraines, we will focus on the temporomandibular joint and if there are any irregularities. If the jaws are not aligned correctly, headaches and migraines can result.

Below are a few things we’ll look for when determining if your migraines are caused by dental or orthodontic issues:

  • The alignment of the jaw and any irregularities
  • Popping or clicking noises when the jaw joints open and close
  • Abnormalities or irregularities with the muscles in the face
  • X-Rays of the face and jaw will be taken

In addition to the X-Rays, we may use other procedures to help determine if orthodontic treatment can help eliminate or reduce your headaches. We will discuss your options with you in order to help you make informed decisions about your health.
