The Importance of Keeping Your Braces Clean

Mouth with braces flossingBraces can be tough to keep clean! Bacteria can hide around the brackets, it takes a few extra steps to properly floss, and food debris often gets stuck in the wires. If not properly cleaned, it’s common for those with orthodontic treatment to have problems with bad breath. Luckily, there are simple tips and tricks to keeping your braces clean and your breath fresh!

Tips on Keeping Your Braces Clean

  • Spend a little more time brushing your teeth – Instead of brushing for the usual 2 minutes at a time, it might be a good idea to brush for 3 minutes. You should be spending at least 10 seconds cleaning every surface of each tooth, making sure to pay extra attention to where the brackets are mounted on the teeth.
  • Brush after every meal – At-home oral hygiene is more important during orthodontic treatment than ever. In order to make sure bacteria and food debris are being properly brushed away, we recommend brushing and flossing after each meal.
  • Make an oral hygiene kit – If you’re going to brush after every meal, it’s a good idea to have a dental hygiene kit in your purse, backpack, or car. This kit should include travel sized toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, or even mouthwash.
  • Receive regular dental cleanings – Lastly, you should still be visiting your regular dentist every six months for a dental cleaning and exam, even during your orthodontic treatment.
