Common Orthodontic Myths & Misconceptions

Boy with braces smilingAs dental technology advances, orthodontic treatment is becoming more and more popular. However, even as it becomes more popular, the myths and misconceptions regarding orthodontic treatment still abound! Here at Lockett Orthodontics, we’d like to put a few of these misconceptions to rest, which we hope will allow you to undergo treatment with more confidence and less stress.

Common Myths Regarding Orthodontia

Below are a few common misconceptions about orthodontic treatment and the truth behind the myth:

  • All adult teeth have to have grown in before orthodontic treatment – Not only is this not true, but it’s actually the exact opposite! The American Association of Orthodontics has recommended that children first visit the orthodontist around the age of 7. This makes us able to treat any alignment problems while the teeth are still malleable and growing.
  • An orthodontist is the same as a family dentist – A family or general dentist works with patients to prevent and treat dental problems such as tooth decay, dental cavities, gum disease, and tooth infections. An orthodontist, such as Dr. Rhoda Lockett focuses on the alignment of the teeth and the oral health problems that misalignment can create.
  • Only teenagers and adolescents can undergo orthodontic treatment – While it’s true that the teenage years are the most common for orthodontic treatment, Dr. Lockett sees patients of all ages, including adults and younger children. Orthodontic treatment has no age restrictions!

If you have any other questions regarding orthodontic treatment or if you’d like to set up a consultation, please don’t hesitate to contact Lockett Orthodontics. Our office is located here in beautiful Colorado Springs, CO.
