Childhood Halitosis and How to Prevent It

Child holding nose due to bad breathIt may surprise you to learn that halitosis (which is chronic bad breath) can avoid people of all ages, including children! You can mask the symptoms by using mouth sprays, mouthwash, minty gum, and breath mints, but these won’t help to cure the underlying cause of halitosis. Chronic bad breath can be very embarrassing, but luckily there are a few ways you can help your child avoid halitosis.

Helping Kids Avoid Halitosis

Below are a few tips on how to help keep your child’s breath fresh and their teeth healthy:

  • Brush every day – When you’re brushing your child’s teeth or supervising your children brush their own teeth, make sure that the gums are being brushed as well. Sometimes it’s the bacteria lurking underneath the gum line that’s causing the odor. Children should be brushing at least twice a day for two minutes at a time, as well as flossing daily.
  • Use a tongue scraper – The tongue is the ideal environment for bacteria; moist and warm. Using a tongue scraper can help to remove bacteria from the tongue and this can make a considerable improvement for halitosis. You can purchase disposable tongue scrapers or simply brush your tongue, making sure to brush from the back to the front.
  • Visit your regular dentist – No matter how clean your child’s mouth is, he or she will still need a professional dental cleaning and exam every 6 months. We can help get rid of any bacteria that may have been lurking around and can give you more tips on how to keep your child’s breath fresh and teeth healthy!

If you have concerns about your child’s halitosis, please make an appointment with their regular dentist. For any questions about orthodontics or maintaining healthy teeth during orthodontic treatment, please contact Lockett Orthodontics today. Our office is located here in Colorado Springs, CO.
