Canker Sores and Orthodontic Treatment

Lip soreCanker sores are always uncomfortable, but they can be even more painful and irritating when you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment. This is because the metal wires and brackets of your braces can rub against canker sores, making them worse and causing them to stick around longer.

Canker Sores

Below are a few reasons why canker sores appear:

  • Family members who are also prone to canker sores
  • Being under a lot of stress
  • Having a compromised immune system
  • Frequently biting the inner cheek or lips
  • Changes in hormones (menopause, and pregnancy)
  • Vitamin deficiencies, especially of folic acid, iron, zinc, and vitamin B-12

Most canker sores go away on their own after about 6-10 days.

Canker Sores & Braces

Below are a few things you can do if you suffer from canker sores during your orthodontic treatment:

  • Use dental wax to protect the canker sore from the nearby wires and brackets.
  • Use mouthwash or any product designed to kill bacteria in the mouth. Avoid mouthwash that contains alcohol as this can cause the canker sores to sting.
  • Numbing products, such as Orajel. This will allow you to eat meals and brush your teeth without feeling pain from your canker sore.
  • Use over-the-counter pain relief medication, such as Tylenol or Motrin.

If your canker sore is especially painful or if it hasn’t healed after 10-12 days, please contact Lockett Orthodontics. Our orthodontic office is located here in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
