Burning Mouth Syndrome

Sad childBurning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) is the medical term for a condition that causes the gums, tongue, lips, cheeks, or throat to feel like they’re burning. No cause for this condition has been found and, unfortunately, there is not a way to test for it. BMS presents differently in every case and may flare up unexpectedly. Because it’s so rare and the symptoms vary from person to person, this condition can be difficult to diagnose and treat.

Symptoms of BMS

Below are a few of the most commonly reported symptoms of Burning Mouth Syndrome:

  • Spectrum of irritation from numbness or tingling, all the way up to feeling like the mouth is being scalded
  • Changes in taste or complete loss in taste
  • Intense metallic taste in the mouth
  • Heightened sense of thirst
  • Dryness in the tongue, mouth, or throat

While some cases of BMS last for months or even years, there are other cases that last only a few days or weeks. The duration of the condition will depend on whether the flare-up is spontaneous or caused by a preexisting condition. Some preexisting conditions include:

  • Dentures that do not fit properly
  • Malnutrition or vitamin deficiencies
  • Allergic reactions to oral gels
  • Trauma to the tissues of the mouth
  • Stomach acid reflux
  • Oral ulcers and oral fungal infections

Preventing Burning Mouth Syndrome

There are a few ways you can prevent BMS or at least lessen the severity of it. We recommend avoiding foods and drinks that contain mint, cinnamon, heavy spices, alcohol, or high levels of acidity. Additionally, it may be a good idea to switch to a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth and to take steps to lessen your anxiety and stress.

If you have the symptoms of Burning Mouth Syndrome, please make an appointment with your general dentist as soon as possible.
