5 Tips To Help You Remember Your Retainer

Help You Remember Your Retainer

Everyone forgets to wear their retainer occasionally. It’s unlikely that one night without it will cause too many problems, but it’s still not something we’d recommend doing!

We know that, until you get in the habit of wearing your retainer every night, it can be difficult to remember all the time. Below are a few tips from our office to help you remember your retainer every night:

  • Put your retainer in the same place every day. Either in your bathroom or on your nightstand, or wherever you’ll remember it. This will serve as a visual reminder to put it in every night and it will also reduce the risk that you’ll lose or misplace it.
  • Set a nightly reminder on your cell phone to remind you put your retainer in. You can also set up email reminders as well.
  • Put a retainer reminder note on the mirror or any other place you’ll see it every day.
  • Clean your retainer every time you take it out. Otherwise you may be tempted to skip wearing a smelly retainer.
  • Ask for help from friends and family to help remind you to wear your retainer. Whether it’s parents, siblings, or a spouse, we’re sure they’d love an excuse to nag you about something!

If you skip wearing your retainer too many times, your teeth can shift back to their original place. This can sometimes mean you might need to wear braces all over again, and we know that’s no one’s goal! If you need more motivation, look up stories of people online who needed braces for a second time. This might scare you into remembering!

If your retainer is becoming tight or uncomfortable or if you’re having trouble remembering to wear it on a regular basis, please contact Colorado Springs, CO’s Lockett Orthodontics. We want you to succeed and retain your beautiful smile!
