4 Spooky Myths About Orthodontic Braces

Halloween is almost here, and this time of year is perfect for talking about all things frightening! There is no shortage of horror stories about dental braces, but the fact is, many of them are just urban legends! Because many of these common scary orthodontic myths are misconceptions and we'd like to clear them up!

4 Spooky Myths About Braces

Below are 4 of the most commonly heard orthodontic myths and the real truth behind them:

  1. Braces will interfere with Wi-Fi signals - False! Braces are not made of any of the same materials that have been known to interfere with Wi-Fi or radio or signals. So the next time you're having connection problems, call your internet provider and not your orthodontist.
  2. Braces increase your risk of being struck by lightning - Having braces neither increases nor decreases your chance of being struck by lightning. Your odds of being struck are still 1 in 700,000, regardless of any dental treatment you may be undergoing!
  3. Braces can set off a metal detector - Unless you're holding something metal, you won't set off a metal detector with braces on! Like Wi-Fi signals, braces are made of different materials than those that set off metal detectors.
  4. If people with braces kiss, they'll get stuck together - Rest assured that this is almost impossible with modern-day brackets. The way they're made now, the brackets and wires are too small to get in the way. So go for the smooch!

This Halloween, make sure you're avoiding candy that could break your brackets or stick to your wires. Chocolate is still the safest choice!

To schedule an appointment for your next adjustment, please call Lockett Orthodontics in Aurora, Colorado. And from all of us at the office, have a safe and happy Halloween!
