At Lockett Orthodontics, we know that it takes a lot of work to grow a beautiful and healthy adult smile. The best way for adults and teens alike to maintain healthy teeth is to know about the threats to teeth and how to avoid these problems.
3 Threats to Teenage Teeth
Below are three of the most common threats to your teen’s dental health:
Dental Cavities – Dental cavities are the number one disease affecting kids and teens in the United States. This is even more upsetting since dental cavities are almost entirely preventable. Teach your children and teens to limit sugar intake, eat more vegetables, brush at least twice a day and floss every day. It’s also important to visit the dentist every 6 months for a dental cleaning and a checkup.
Smoking and Vaping – Tobacco can damage your teen’s dental and overall health. The use of tobacco products has been shown to cause periodontal disease, bad breath, delayed healing, stained teeth, and cancer including oral cancer, throat cancer, and lung cancer. Unfortunately, the popularity of e-cigarettes and vaporizers is increasing, and both are terrible for your teen’s oral health. Please make sure to talk to your kids and teenagers about the dangers of tobacco, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.
Sports Injuries – Lastly, according to the CDC, around 3 million teeth are knocked out annually at youth sporting events. We recommend that anyone participating in sports or other activities where a blow to the mouth may occur, wear a sports guard! Not only do mouth guards prevent damage to the teeth, but they also decrease the odds of receiving a concussion.
